Backswing Like A Pro

The golf backswing can be a mysterious, but important part of the game even to beginners. There are different styles of backswing on the PGA Tour, but there is one thing that is common between all, the best players get their upper bodies fully turned, with hands as far from the head as possible and clubface sitting on the same angle as their left arm. Without the body loaded correctly during the early stages of the golf backswing, any golfer will tend to over swing as their brains don't have a sense of muscular tension that would signal the beginning of the downswing.

Golf Tournaments
During Golf Tournaments, even experienced golfers are in some cases humbled by a bad swing. There is nothing more troubling than a golf ball gone wild to remind a player that they have become out of practice. There are a couple of simple things you can do to achieve that perfect backswing:

  • Position your body so that your feet are shoulder length apart. When you position your body like this, you will be able to easily shift your weight as you swing your golf club.
  • You simply hold a club up at waist high, remove your left hand, and then hinge the right arm at the elbow to cock the club up and over the tip of your right shoulder.
  • Turn your shoulders and upper body away from the target until the right forearm is to the right of your body.
  • The right elbow again pointing at your right hip. Finally, reach across and replace your left hand on the grip.
    • Do not race back or jerk the club away too quick. Instead you want to stay in balance and turn around your spines axis.
    • Through repetition your body begins to recognize and respond automatically to the sensations involved in putting together a naturally correct and symmetrical backswing.
